Cipher Wallet approached us to redesign their mobile application. While their backend security was state-of-the-art, their user retention was suffering due to a complex, intimidating onboarding process. By implementing a "human-centric" design strategy and simplifying the transaction flow, we helped Cipher achieve a 45% increase in daily active users (DAU) and a 2x reduction in support tickets related to login issues.

The Client

Cipher is a non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet focused on privacy and cross-chain compatibility.

  • Industry: Fintech / Web3

  • Target Audience: Gen Z and Millennial crypto-curious investors.

  • Core Feature: Multi-signature security with social recovery.

The Challenge: The "Fear Factor"

Crypto can be scary. New users often feel overwhelmed by seed phrases, private keys, and gas fees. Cipher’s original interface was technically robust but visually stark and confusing.

  • High Drop-off: 60% of users abandoned the app during the "Wallet Creation" phase.

  • Error Anxiety: Users were terrified of making irreversible mistakes during transfers.

"We built the safest wallet on the market, but nobody could figure out how to use it without reading a manual. We needed an interface that felt as simple as a banking app but as secure as a vault."Elena Rostova, CTO of Cipher

The Solution: Trust Through Transparency

We focused on three key UX interventions:

1. Progressive Onboarding Instead of dumping technical terms on the user immediately, we introduced concepts gradually. We replaced the intimidating "Write down your 24 words now" step with a gamified security checklist that users could complete at their own pace.

2. "Jargon-Free" Mode We created a toggle that translates technical terms (e.g., "Gas Fee," "Slippage") into plain English (e.g., "Network Cost," "Price Variance"). This empowered users to understand exactly what they were paying for.

3. Visual Transaction Confirmation To reduce anxiety, we added a "pre-flight check" screen that visually maps out where funds are going, using recognized icons and clear distinct color coding for "Send" vs. "Receive."

The Results

  • 40% Increase in Onboarding Completion: The simplified flow drastically reduced friction for first-time users.

  • 25% Boost in Transaction Volume: Users felt more confident moving assets, leading to higher usage.

  • Award-Winning Design: The app was featured in "Top Fintech Apps to Watch" for its accessible UX.
